# Bringing your number to Rivet

> What to have ready, how to upload your bill and sign, what happens on move day, and why you keep your current service until the move is done.

You can keep the phone number your clients already have. Rivet moves it
from your current provider: you upload your latest phone bill, check the
details, and sign, on your computer. Most moves take
one to three weeks.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Keep your current phone service until we tell you the move is done.
> Cancelling it early can lose the number.

## What to have ready

Every move needs your **latest phone bill**. What else depends on the kind
of phone you're bringing.

### A cell phone

* Your **transfer PIN**, if your provider gives you one. Most cell
providers do: you'll find it in your provider's app or account, or by
asking them. If you don't have one, tick **My provider doesn't use a
PIN**. If your provider turns out to need it, we'll let you know and you
  can sign again with it.
* If your plan is **prepaid**, the phone's IMEI. Dial \*#06# on the phone
  to see it.
* **iPhone:** turn the number off in Messages and FaceTime before move day.
**Android:** turn off chat features in your messaging app. Otherwise
clients' texts keep going to the old phone.
* If this is also your personal cell, ask your provider what happens to
the phone after the number moves.

### A landline

* The **service address** exactly as it's printed on your bill. That's
where the line is installed, and it can differ from your mailing
  address.
* If your **internet comes on the same line**, it can be cut when the
number moves. Ask your provider to keep your internet on its own before
  you start.

### An office phone system

* Your account number, and your transfer PIN if your provider uses one.
* Ask your provider whether moving the number or cancelling has a fee
  under your contract.

### A phone app

* Your account number, and a PIN if the app uses one.
* **Google Voice:** your transfer PIN is required.
* Ask your app whether it releases numbers and whether there's a fee.
* Numbers from a directory or listing service usually belong to that
service. Ask them before you start.

## Upload your bill

**1. Open Rivet on your computer**

Sign in at your computer and open **Messages**. The banner at the top
says **Upload your bill**. On your phone, tap **Finish on your
computer** instead and we'll email you a link.

**2. Choose your bill**

A PDF from your provider's website works best. A clear photo of a
paper bill works too. The file can be up to 10 MB, and you can upload
up to 10 times a day.

**3. Wait about half a minute**

You can leave the page while Rivet reads your bill; the banner
says **Your details are ready to check** when it's done. After 45
seconds you can also choose **Fill it in yourself** and type the
details in.

## Check and sign

The form opens with what Rivet read from your bill. Anything marked
**Please check this one** is worth a second look. Every detail needs to
match your bill exactly: your provider compares them with their own
records. When the service address is marked, compare it with your bill,
then choose **This is correct**, or **Edit** to fix it.

1. Check your **First name** and **Last name**, the service address and
the account number. If the phone service is in your practice's name,
   add the **Business name** too.
2. Choose your current provider.
3. Type your transfer PIN if your provider gives you one. If you don't
have one, tick **My provider doesn't use a PIN**.
4. Sign in the box with your mouse, trackpad or finger. The form is
signed in your first and last name.
5. Tick **I'm the account holder, or I can show I'm allowed to move this
number.**, then choose **Sign and send**.

Not sure what a box means? Select the **i** beside it.

The service address needs to be the street where the phone is used, not a
PO Box.

We prepare the request to your provider and let you know when it's on its
way. For a cell phone, the next screen reminds you to turn off iMessage
and FaceTime on the number **Before move day**. Your signed form is valid for 30 days. If it hasn't gone to your
provider within 25 days, we'll email you to **sign again**. On your computer, choose **Sign again**. Your details
are saved: type your PIN again if you have one, then sign.

## While your provider reviews it

If your number is a cell phone or a phone app, your provider may text you
to approve the move, at any hour. **Reply within 90 minutes**, or the move
is cancelled. Keep your phone with you, and make sure texts from your
provider aren't blocked.

If your provider sends the request back, the banner says so; open it
to see their reason. On your computer, choose **Edit and sign again**, check
your details against your bill, and sign. On your phone, the banner shows
**Finish on your computer** instead.

Video sessions work the whole time. Clients join from your Rivet link.

## On move day

Calls to your number start ringing in Rivet. Texts usually follow within
minutes, and can take up to 3 business days; until then, some may still
reach your old phone. When calls and texts both work, we'll email you to
say the move is done. Then you can cancel your old phone service.

## 911

Rivet can't call 911. In an emergency, call from your phone's own dialer.

## Your bill and your form

Your bill and your signed form are kept in your private Rivet account until
30 days after the move is done or cancelled, then deleted. The details
Rivet read from your bill are deleted as soon as you sign; your signed
form keeps them, for the same 30 days after the move is done or
cancelled.
