# Signing up at getrivet.ca/start

> What each of the eight signup questions is for, and what happens after you tap Start my free trial.

Signup is a single page at **`getrivet.ca/start`** — eight questions, one at
a time, the same shape as a Typeform. No credit card. Total time from "What's
your email?" to "Start my free trial" is usually under two minutes.

## The eight questions, in order

<Steps>
  <Step title="Email">
    The address you'll use to sign in to Rivet. Use a professional address
    if you have one — it's the only address Rivet will ever email you at,
    and the same one you'll type into the app when you sign in on a new
    device.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your name">
    First and last, in two boxes. Both are needed before you can carry
    on. Your first name is what Rivet calls you in emails.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Practice name">
    The name your clients see when Rivet texts them on your behalf — for
    example, on the auto-reply that goes out after a missed call. If you
    practise under your own name, just put your name. If you have a
    practice name ("Riverside Counselling"), use that.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your video waiting room link">
    The web address your clients open to reach you — `getrivet.ca/` and
    then whatever you choose. Rivet suggests one from your practice name,
    and you can take it or type your own. It's checked as you type, so
    you'll know before you carry on whether it's free.

    Pick it carefully: it's the address you'll put in appointment
    confirmations, and it's the one your clients will come to recognise.
    You can change it later, three times.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your mobile number">
    The cell phone Rivet can reach you at if anything needs your attention
    during setup. North American format (`(519) 555-1234` or `5195551234`
    both work).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your province or territory">
    One tap. Every number search stays inside it, so "Windsor" means
    Windsor, Ontario when you're in Ontario — never Windsor, Nova Scotia.
    It also sets the time zone your voicemails and texts are stamped in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="The city your practice is in">
    Rivet looks for available numbers in your city first, so your clients
    see a number they recognise when you call them back. Use the actual
    city your practice operates out of — Windsor, Calgary, Halifax — not
    the closest metro.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your practice line">
    Up to five local numbers inside your province, with a line above them
    saying exactly where they came from. Choose the one you like the look
    of, agree to receive transactional emails about your account, complete
    the "Verify you are human" check, and tap **Start my free trial**. See
    [Choosing your number](/getting-started/choosing-your-number) for how
    the search works and how to ask for a specific area code.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens after you submit

Rivet creates your account and routes you to one of two screens depending
on what device you're on. Your practice line is set up within a few hours
— you'll see the number in the app once it's ready. Video, the waiting
room, your Rivet URL and everything else work as soon as you sign in.

    A magic-link email lands in your inbox within a minute. Tap the link
    on the device you want to use Rivet on. The link expires in one hour
    — if you miss the window, sign in at `next.getrivet.ca` and request a
    new one.

    You go straight to an install screen with App Store and Play Store
    links. Install the Rivet app, open it, sign in with the email you
    just used, and the in-app sign-in handles auth.

<Note>
  **Check spam first if the email doesn't show up.** First emails from a
  new sending domain often land in spam — Gmail and Outlook are aggressive
  about new senders. If you find it there, mark it as "Not Spam" so
  future Rivet emails route to your inbox.
</Note>

## Why the form asks for so little

The signup form deliberately doesn't ask for:

* A credit card. The 14-day trial is no-card. Billing only enters the
  picture if you decide to keep Rivet at the end of the trial.
* Your licence number, college, or specialty. None of that is needed to
  operate a phone line and a video room.
* A business address. Your practice address belongs in your EHR, not in
  Rivet's signup form.

Everything Rivet needs to find you a local number, give you a room your
clients can reach, and contact you during setup, you give in those eight
questions. Everything else gets handled
inside the app, when you actually need it.
